Total Knee Replacement surgery has been designed for people whose knees have been severely damaged by diseases (like Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, post traumatic arthritis, etc.) regardless of the cause of damage.
During the surgery, the damaged joint is replaced by an artificial joint, which is cemented into the place, making knee as good as new. About 90 – 95% patients with painful & stiff knees have very good outcome after surgery and are helped to walk within 48 – 72 hrs. with support.
Total Knee Replacement brings freedom of movement by getting relief from perpetual pain & stiffness, correction of deformity and obviating the need of support like walker or wheel chair for ambulation, and allows patients to resume their daily activities, which were often put on hold because of severe arthritis.

Broadly speaking a knee replacement surgery can be carried out either through the traditional approach, or newer minimally invasive approach (MIS), also known as quadriceps-sparing approach.
It allows surgeons to insert the same artificial implant through a shorter incision.
This surgical approach avoids trauma to the quadriceps muscle, which is the most important muscle group around the knee, thereby allowing quicker recovery time including walking and knee bending movements.
